The author (1863-1938) was a Lithuanian teacher, poet, publisher and press worker who spent most of his adult years in Warsaw. A strong advocate for Lithuanian autonomy, he participated in the Great Seimas of 1905. Much of his work expresses his love for his native land and many of his poems have been turned into folksongs.
