Vintage Folding Hand Carved Wooden Chess Set. A real statement piece.

There is one small approximately 1.5 mm dent in both sides of the play surface near the hinge where it looks like a pebble was on the board where it closed.

This one-of-a-kind hand carved wooden chess set is stunning. Very large. Closed dimensions are 17 1/2 inches tall, 12 3/4 inches wide, 4 inches deep.

Pieces are fairly large. Kings are 4.1 inches tall. Pawns are 2.6 inches tall.

Features a beautiful foldable game board with intricate wooden inlays depicting a breathtaking Russian skyline. Pieces are stored in locking compartments. When folded, the case is made to look like a large wooden book. This set is not only a functional piece but also a work of art.

Game pieces show appropriate wear for their age. All are complete except for one king piece is missing an small ornamental top to its hat.

The original padding material on the bases of the pieces had deteriorated over many, many years and became sticky kind of like tar and so you’ll see some small black marks on the case and pieces.

With some very careful picking & polishing these black spots could be removed. I have no accurate guess as to the age of this set. I’m thinking at least 50-75 years based on this deterioration?

Each piece has been expertly carved by hand with an incredible level of detail and quality.

The case does have some scratches in the landscape art that are visible in the pictures. A small dent in the wood that you can see in one of the close up images. Overall the condition is very good and wear appears to be appropriate to its age.
