Josef Kalous (1887 Vienna - 1974 Vienna) was a son of a wealthy Viennese owner of apartment buildings. Together with his friend Hans Boehler, he studied under Franz Jaschke, attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, and finally continued his education at the private painting school of Professor Robert Scheffer together with A.Faistauer, A Peschka, etc. There, Kalous got acquainted with his future wife Gret Scheffer, daughter of R.Scheffer, who later became a popular fashion designer. During the World War I he was active as a portrait painter and postcard designer, after the war, he taught at R. Scheffer's school and worked as a restorer of Old Master paintings for the Vienna Kunsthistorisches Museum. After 1945 he restored bomb-damaged paintings for the Historical Museum of the City of Vienna. Josef Kalous was also a well-known art collector.
