This lot consists of two 4"x5.75" softcover books written (or translated and classified) by The Buddhist Yogi C. M. Chen and published in 1970 in Kalimpong, India in limited editions of 1000 copies as part of the Chen Booklet Series. They were distributed to Chen's compatriots in the United States to help them communicate Buddhist concepts to the many hippies exploring various non-Western religions at the time. Small and originally given out for free, it's likely relatively few copies have survived the ensuing 50+ years.

You get:

1. Welcome Hippies by This Way (64 pages, series No. 52) - The author describes the hippie dropout lifestyle (lots of LSD references) and the trouble it leads to, and how Buddhism offers a much superior and lasting "high":

"James Groovy and Linda the girl were killed in a boiler room in New York East village Hippieland. His girl friend Susie says 'Every one is scared, every one carries weapons even I carry a knife now.' They are treated as filth in Haight-Ashbury, San Francisco...."

"A hippie reported 'Man! when I am upon weed, I'm really livin'. I float up and up and up until I'm miles above the earth. Then baby I begin to come apart, my hands leave my wrists, my arms and legs leave my body, and I just floooooooat all over the universe.' But after the function of LSD was over, was he still high? He did not report."

2. Selected Han-Shan Poems for Hippie Reading (48 pages, series No. 53) - unlike the above book not a lot of original material here, just a few pages on hippies followed by translations of Buddhist poems that may appeal to the hippie mindset.

They're in good condition, with light cover wear. Welcome Hippies' front cover has a tiny tear at the right side, marginally affecting the following 16 pages. It may have some underlining - it's not clear if these are printed or handwritten.
