Francis Grose (1731?-1791), a recipient of a classical education, chose to study art instead of pursuing a university education. Starting in 1769 he exhibited at the Royal Academy drawings mainly of an architectural nature. He was the author of "Antiquities of England and Wales," "The Antiquities of Scotland," "A Classical Dictionary of the Vulgur Tongue" and several other titles.
