Rockall - an uninhabited granite rock, in the Atlantic Ocean, the surface part of the destroyed cone of an extinct volcano. The earliest recorded date of landing on the island is often given as 8 July 1810, when a Royal Navy officer named Basil Hall set out with a small landing party from the frigate HMS Endymion to the island. Where once a lone rock in the middle of the Atlantic was of little interest, in the 20th century the location of the island became relevant because of the potential oil and fishing rights that could go to a country recognized as having legal rights to it. On September 18, 1955, Rockall was annexed by the British Crown. The United Kingdom claims that Rockall is within its exclusive economic zone and is part of its territory, but Ireland does not recognize this claim. Less than 20 individuals are known to have landed on Rockall. It is known about five people who spent the night on Rockall and spent a significant number of days here. Survival expert Tom McClean lived on the island from 26 May 1985 to 4 July 1985 to support the British claim to the island. In 1997, the environmental organization Greenpeace briefly occupied the island, naming it Waveland, in protest against oil exploration. Greenpeace declared the island a "new global state" and offered citizenship to anyone willing to take an oath of allegiance.
