Handsome
fold-out 1939 Sinclair road map of Illinois, with stunning cover
graphics spanning five panels, printed more than 84 years ago.
-
The map opens to 27" x 19½" and has great detail on old highway
alignments, including U.S. Route 66, with cartography by Rand McNally.
-
There's a
transcontinental map of the United States on the reverse side.
-
The 5-panel service station illustration was painted by noted
American artist Rico Tomaso (1898-1985), whose work also appeared in The
Saturday Evening Post, Redbook, Good Housekeeping, Cosmopolitan,
Woman's Home Companion, and Ladies' Home Journal.
-
Here he has created a lush landscape evoking the romance of automobile
travel, with two uniformed Sinclair attendants helping a happy couple
in a shiny new convertible.
-
The map was distributed by the Sinclair Oil Company in 1939 and is
dated by the code number in the lower margin: U.3600.
-
The 1939 New York
World's Fair opened the year this map was printed, and there's a
photograph of the Petroleum Building and oil derrick at the Fair on the
reverse side.
-
Condition: This map is in very good, lightly used
condition,
with a few minor edge tears. A previous owner has marked
