Alfred Basel was born in 1876 in Vienna and died (hunting accident) in 1920 in Dickenau, Lower, Austria. He studied at the Vienna School of Applied Arts in 1898-1906, where his teachers were Karl Hrachowina, Ludwig Minigerode and Felician Myrbach-Rheinfeld. During the World War One he was at the Russian and Italian fronts as an officer and worked there as a military artist. Basel was a member of the Vienna Secession and a founding member of "Werkbund" (work federation of artists).
