Kansas City Skyline

I had just left the hospital for a severe heart condition a few months ago before taking this photo. I almost didn't make it. They kept me under observation for weeks.

I wanted to return back to normal life and get back to the East Coast where I live.

It took all I had to get back across country in my van, with the heart medication I had to take to stay alive.

But I'm a photographer. Through a long career I've been fortunate enough to have developed patience and strong resiliency.

I hadn't done any photography since I'd been hospitalized and this was a fresh start, where I could get back to my craft! All the hardship up to this point was worth it, to experience the freedom of the open road again, and get to take pictures!

So off I went from San Diego, in southern California all the way across the country to Baltimore, Maryland!

As I began driving through the south-west desert and into the rolling hills of the Mid-West, I knew I'd be stopping in Kansas City.

I visited with a friend, who took me for some Kansas City BBQ! We went to Arthur Bryant's BBQ and the smell alone, walking in was incredible. I couldn't wait to tuck in! My favorite was the 3 B's sandwich, I can still taste the smoky, savory tones of that BBQ now.

We shared all kinds of local fare and tried all the sauces, and their delicious fries.

We then split up and I set out to the WW1 Memorial overlooking Union Station in Downtown.

The evening was approaching and I knew there would be a spectacular sunset.

I walked the perimeter of the entire monument and then climbed to the top. With my heart condition, this simple journey took the wind out of me, but it was a refreshly cool night out which made it easier.

I got there a little later than I wanted, having to walk a lot slower than I normally would, and carrying a 40 lbs camera bag the entire way.

I was afraid I'd miss the sunset, but I made it!

As I reached the top at the edge of the overlook, hundreds of feet up I could see miles in every direction, and the sky looked amazing!

Rich deep tones later in the sunset made the entire scene even better than it would have been if I'd been faster!

Union Station was lit up in every color, with the skyline framing it beautifully.

Being up so high, I was insulated from the hustle and bustle of the city itself, which was reduced to a low rumble at sunset on a Friday night.

I got my shot and loved it!

I'd seen a friend get a shot of Kansas City 7 years ago and wanted to see what I could do!

It had been earmarked many moons ago, and I finally got to capture the splendor of downtown Kansas City.

It felt so good to be back! I'd been cooped up in a hospital bed for seemingly ever, and for the first time since the incident, I got to share the beauty of the world with its people once again. Worth it all 10 times over =)
