Indian Railways is one of the largest railway systems in the world and it is almost a mini country by itself. Further, it is one of the largest public sector organizations in the world with its own budget passed by the parliament. Performance appraisal is the systematic description of an employees jobrelevant strengths and weaknesses. This helps to gain insight into how employees pursue their jobs. When employees feel dissatisfied with the way their jobs are being evaluated, then it will adversely affect their attitude towards the job and their performance. Hence, it is felt that there is a need to study the perceptions of the employees on the present performance appraisal system in Railways and link it to their job satisfaction.
