Title: 8 brochures & booklets 1951-53 for Point 4, UNESCO & other technical assistance programs for developing countries
Publication: Washington and elsewhere: 1951-1953

Description: 8 items touting government programs offering assistance to developing countries. Point 4 was a Truman-era initiative, as a means to win the "hearts and minds" of the developing world after countries from the Middle East, Latin America, Asia and Africa had complained about the emphasis on European aid by the U.S. By sharing American know-how in various fields, especially agriculture, industry and health, officials could help "third world" nations—i.e., those not aligned with NATO nor the Soviets—on the development path, raise the standard of living, and show that democracy and capitalism could provide for the welfare of the individual. The program evolved into the current Agency for International Development, but never had sufficient funding or dedication to help other countries in substantive ways. Although designed to uplift nations, the programme's legacy was one of self-interest as America improved their imports of strategical raw materials, without significantly alleviating the partnered nations of deprivation. We have, in no particular order 1) Point 4 Profiles. 38 pp. booklet telling the stories of 4 individuals and the impact they had through their work in other countries (an American-Iranian studying agriculture in Wisconsin and providing expertise to Iranians, a nurse in Quito, a teacher in India, etc.); 2) Point 4 Pioneers, Reports from a New Frontier. 1951 36 pp booklet with reports on progress in Liberia, Paraguay and India; 3) Point 4, What It Is...How It Works...12 pp. brochure booklet on the initiatives; 4) Point 4 and Liberia, Partners in Progress, 8 pp booklet with illustrations; 5) Technical Cooperation Bulletin, May 1953. 16 pp, stapled 8.5 x 11" sheets giving information and updates on Point 4 and other programs; 6) Fight for Food, 1953 larger format booklet on the Point 4 aerial methods of eradicating the desert locust (a scourge) in Iran, India and Pakistan; 7) The United Natiuons, UNESCO and American Schools, Educational Policies Commission.
