Photograph Notes: This partially restored steam crane stands on the towpath of the Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal, between Little Lever and Radcliffe, as a permanent reminder of the area's industrial past. It dates from around 1884 and was used to lift containers of coal from boats and lower them into the yard of the Mount Sion Works below. The crane, which is thought to be one of the earliest surviving steam cranes in the country, has been designated as a Grade II listed building (Historic England List Entry Number: 1242921 ://historicengland.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1242921 ) since 2011. It is one of only a small number of surviving in-situ steam cranes and is thought to be the only example in England that still remains in its original canalside location. Although it has been unused for a number of years and is now in quite a poor condition, its component parts remain remarkably complete and enable a clear understanding of how the crane operated, adding significantly to the historic interest of the Manchester, Bolton & Bury Canal and is a vivid reminder of the use of steam technology in the canal industry. A line drawing of this crane is used as the logo for the Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal Society ://web.archive/web/20180902124959/://mbbcs.uk/indexl (archived September 2018).
