Notes: 1881 reissue. Front joint cracked, front board and endpaper loosening, edges rubbed, boards a bit soiled with a couple light stains. [viii], 182 pp. Elephant folio. Leather spine and corners over paper-covered boards, gilt titles, blind-stamped title on front board. Originally released as a companion volume to Studer's Popular Ornithology in 1878. Includes a systematic table of the birds of North America prepared by Frank M. Chapman, and 119 full-page chromolithographic plates from paintings by Theodore Jasper. Many illustrations depict aspects of behavior, unlike some ornithological references which feature primarily posed images. Studer was an active member of the American Ornithologists' Union, and president of the Natural Science Association of America. Sitwell p. 145.
