About the theme:
Animals in Their Habitats explores four distinct habitats - temperate forests, oceans, deserts, and rain forests (not included) - and the animals that live within each habitat. While each book focuses on a different habitat, the same key science concepts are developed across books to help students focus on the big ideas. The theme explores the interdependence of plants and animals within a habitat and develops an understanding of how animals adapt and live within a habitat that meets their needs. Students use the specific knowledge and vocabulary within each book to discuss and examine these big ideas, or key concepts.

1. Desert Animals - paperback 2004 - former classroom copy - 32 pages
Summary:
Deserts are harsh dry environments that seem to support little life. But the plants and animals that live in deserts have adapted to the lack of water, the extreme temperatures, and the shortage of readily available food. Behavioral adaptations help animals survive, such as the burrowing of the kangaroo rat deep into the sand for protection from the sun's heat. Physical adaptations also help animals survive, such as the camel's long eyelashes that keep sand out of its eyes.

2. Forest Animals - paperback 2004 - former classroom copy - 32 pages
Summary:
Temperate forests are found throughout the world north of the Tropic of Cancer and south of the Tropic of Capricorn. The moderate climate, abundant rainfall, and rich fertile soil support a variety of vegetation that provides food for many different kinds of animals. Common temperate forest animals include squirrels, rabbits, skunks, eagles, mountain lions, foxes, koalas, and bears. Temperate forest animals have adapted to their habitats in many ways, such as bears hibernating in winter.

3. Ocean Animals - paperback 2004 - former classroom copy - 32 pages
Summary:
Oceans are essential for life on Earth. Covering nearly two thirds of Earth's surface, they contain 97 percent of the world's water. They also provide a rich habitat for millions of plants and animals. Ocean animals live at all depths - from the shallow sunlit area where there is an abundance of food to the deepest, darkest, and coldest depths at 11 kilometers deep. Ocean animals adapt to these different environments in many ways.
