Cashmere is a luxury
fiber that is really one of a kind. Its silken feel, feather-light weight, and
appreciable status make it a highly desirable product. Despite the glamour
associated with cashmere, it hails from humble beginnings.
Cashmere is harvested
from the goats during their annual molting season through the shedding or the
shearing of their down. In the frigid mountain climates where most of the goats
are raised, the dense inner coat guards against harsh winter weather, but once
the seasons change, goats begin to lose the protective layer of down.
The resultant hair is
scarce and after it is carefully examined and graded, it is transported to a
Cashmere specialist. Scott & Charters uses the company Todd & Duncan,
for cleansing, spinning and dyeing. They then knit the resultant fiber up into
the world-renowned quality product; it takes the produce of approximately 3-4
goats to knit one cashmere sweater.
