This, executed in 1800s, superior quality pastel is (as we are 100% convinced) a typical work of well-known Saxonian pastelist Daniel Caffé (see our comparison images nr.7-10).

Daniel Caffé the Elder (1756 Kuestrin - 1815 Leipzig) was initially a valet and a writer and was engaged merely autodidactically with drawing and painting. First in 1782 he became in Dresden a pupil of court painter Johann Heinrich Schmidt and of Academy Professor Johann Alvise Casanova. Beyond that, Caffé was influenced by Anton Graff and Anton Raphael Mongs in his portrait painting. In 1795 the artist settled down for good in Leipzig, where he became a sought-after portraitist of the Saxonian bourgeoisie and aristocracy. Between 1804 and 1814 he exhibited in academic exhibitions of Berlin and Dresden. Only a small part of his works is today saved and publicly accessible.
