Benito Amilcare Andrea Mussolini (9 July 1883 – 28 April 1945) was an Italian politician and leader of the National Fascist Party, ruling the country from 1922 to his ousting in 1943. In 1926 Mussolini seized total power as dictator and ruled Italy as Il Duce ("the leader") from 1930 to 1943. Mussolini was one of the key figures in the creation of fascism.
Mussolini's influence in propaganda was such that he had surprisingly little opposition to suppress. Nonetheless, he was "slightly wounded in the nose" when he was shot on 7 April 1926 by Violet Gibson, an Irish woman and daughter of Lord Ashbourne, who was subsequently deported after her arrest. On 31 October 1926, 15-year-old Anteo Zamboni attempted to shoot Mussolini in Bologna. Zamboni was lynched on the spot. Mussolini also survived a failed assassination attempt in Rome by anarchist Gino Lucetti, and a planned attempt by the Italian anarchist Michele Schirru, which ended with Schirru's capture and execution.
Gino Lucetti (August 31, 1900 - September 17, 1943) was an Italian anarchist and would-be assassin.
Born in Carrara, Italy, he fought in the assault troops during World War I. Later he emigrated to France, from where he returned to attempt the assassination of Benito Mussolini, Italy's Fascist Duce. On September 11, 1926, in the Porta Pia square in Rome, he threw a bomb against Mussolini's car, but without effect.
Arrested, Lucetti stood trial in June 1927, and was condemned to 30 years in prison. The politician Vincenzo Baldazzi was also condemned for having supported him in preparing the attempt.
In 1943 Lucetti escaped from prison with the help of others, but was killed shortly afterwards during a German bombing raid on Ischia.
