Early 19th century netsuke carved out of antler of deer species “Cervus nippon” (also called sika or Japanese deer, conservation status “Least Concern”) of Daikoku (one of the 7 Gods of Good Fortune, that of wealth) standing on two rice bales and holding his mallet on a shoulder. The netsuke is essentially a wish for wealth. Good design, black ink highlights, porous center on top and bottom is plugged as is usual in such pieces, and plugs are carved as part of the netsuke. Natural blemishes in the material, which actually add charm to the piece, great facial expression, beautiful patina. Height 1.35 inches.
