A beautifully produced photographic study of the social life of the Old Believers in the communities of Gervais and Woodburn, Oregon, and Nikolaevsk, Alaska. The black-and-white photographs were taken between 1966 and 1978. Text is interwoven with the pictures, relating the customs and personal stories of the communities. Nearly forty examples of Old Believer belts and embroidery (some in color) are also featured. Concludes with a sixteen page history of the Old Believers by Margaret McKibben (who spent nine years working for them as a translator), a glossary, and lists of the photographs (dates, places, etc.) and the belts and embroideries (noting date, place and name of maker).   

Priscilla Carrasco (b. 1933) is an American photographer whose work can be found in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Portland Art Museum, and the Center for Creative Photography.
