After the end of World War 1, the State of Czechoslovakia was established and the Government asked Alphonse Mucha, an established artist from Moravia to design the first postage stamps for the new independent country. The first issues were illustrated with depiction of Hradcany (Prague Castle) for postage and other designs for postage dues and newspaper stamps.
