printed more
than 120 years
ago.
- The image area measures 33 x
26.8 cm [13" x 10½"] and
features a handsome gallery of flags, banners, and pennants of the
United States
of America.
- The official U.S. flag at that time had 45 stars.
- Other flags shown include the Union Jack, Colonial Flag,
Bunker Hill Flag,
and the "Original Stars and Stripes," also known as the Cowpens Flag.
- The slogans in the scrollwork at the bottom of the
lithograph read:
"One Flag, One Cause, One Country" and "United We Stand, Divided We
Fall," words
which have a special
resonance today.
- Beneath the U.S. pennant and shield are portraits of two of the
key admirals of the U.S. Navy during the
Spanish-American War: George Dewey and William Thomas Sampson.

Text in the lower margin describes certain flag
protocols, including the
flying of a flag at halfmast as a sign of mourning.
