Die Goldmünze in Farbe zelebriert das 250. Jubiläum der zweiten und erstmals offiziellen Entdeckungsreise von James Cook. Der Kapitän und seine Crew wurden 1772 von der britischen Regierung beauftragt, den mysteriösen Kontinent im Süden zu finden, dessen Existenz schon von Aristoteles vermutet wurde. Unter dem Kommando von James Cook überquerten die beiden Schiffe "Resolution" und "Discovery" am 17. Januar 1773 erstmals den südlichen Polarkreis - der erhoffte Anblick des geheimnisvollen Kontinents südlich des Kaps der guten Hoffnung wurde ihnen jedoch verwehrt, sodass James Cook die Existenz des Südpols anzweifelte, welcher nur 50 Jahre später entdeckt wurde. Cook wurde dennoch wie ein Held gefeiert und bei seiner Rückkehr von König George III. persönlich geehrt.

Das Motiv der Münze aus 99,99% reinem Gold zeigt eine farbige Darstellung des südlichen Eismeeres sowie ein detailliertes Bild eines der Schiffe. Die Aufschrift "CAPTAIN COOK CROSSES THE ANTARCTIC CIRCLE" und die Jahreszahl "1773" sind ebenfalls im Design enthalten. The gold coin in color celebrates the 250th anniversary of the second and first official voyage of discovery by James Cook. The captain and his crew were commissioned in 1772 by the British government to find the mysterious continent to the south, whose existence was already suspected by Aristotle.
