Istvan Komaromy (1910-1975)
was a German born Hungarian who stumbled upon a talent for glass blowing while
attending university at Budapest by creating scientific glassware for his
fellow science students. In his spare time,
Komaromy was captivated by a passion for creating art deco pieces. A professor who was impressed with his work convinced
him to leave scientific studies and devote himself to a career in glass
making. The same professor secured
sponsorships to fund his travels and entry into exhibitions throughout Europe
for which Komaromy went on to win many gold and silver awards. In 1931, while exhibiting his works at the World’s Fair, he was
described by Mussolini as the “Michelangelo of glass artists”. After his marriage to an English
woman in the late 1930’s, Komaromy settled
in London, set up a studio and began making his mark as one of London’s three most prominent
lampworkers. His work was commissioned by
Queen Mary and said to later have been collected by Queen Elizabeth, as
well. Throughout his lifetime, Istvan Komaromy
made appearances on tv and radio shows and was featured in several art
magazines. His works are archived in the
Victoria & Albert Museum, Pilkington’s Museum of Glass, and the Budapest Museum of Applied Art. After his death in 1975 he was entitled the “Pioneer of Glass
Sculpture” in an article
carried by the Telegraph & Times.
