The F-4EJ Kai is an Air Self-Defense Force fighter developed from the F-4EJ Phantom II.
Adoption was decided as a successor to the F-86F in 1968, and more than 20 years have passed since the introduction of the F-4EJ, which began deployment in 1969. I have been doing research and development for years. As a result, in February 1982, we announced a renovation plan as F-4EJ Kai. This modification mainly includes the improvement of combat capability and the adoption of the ASIP inspection method, which is a measure to extend the life of the aircraft.
Regarding the improvement of combat capability, first of all, we installed AN / APG-66J, which was modified for F-4EJ from Westinghouse AN / APG-66, which uses fire control radar for F-16.
This radar is a small pulse Doppler radar that is suitable for searching from the sky for aircraft flying at low altitudes over the sea.
Along with this, the on-board computer was changed from the analog type to a digital type computer.
This made it possible to integrate the weapons system and operate domestically produced ASM-1 anti-ship missiles.
Navigation equipment has also been changed from analog to digital.
The digitization of the inertial navigation system has greatly improved navigation accuracy, and it also has a target mark function that can mark up to three target points.
In addition, as a means of self-defense, the radar-warning device has been modified to an improved type, and detailed data is displayed on the CRT screen in the cockpit.
In addition, as a measure to simplify the pilot's operation procedure, the HOTAS concept that allows various operations with hands on the control stick and throttle lever has been adopted.
Along with these modifications, a new head-up display has been adopted for the processed data so that the pilot can read the data while facing the front.
The F-4EJ Kai adopted the ASIP aircraft management system as a measure to extend the life of the aircraft. This is a system that can manage the flight performance data of each aircraft by computer and manage the fatigue level of each aircraft individually.
With this ASIP method, it is possible to extend the life of each aircraft by about 2,000 hours.
The main mission of the F-4EJ Kai is interception combat, but since the ground attack is also significantly improved compared to the F-4EJ, the support fighter F-1 will be retired in the future. A squadron will be on a support combat mission.
