This incredible Georgian mourning ring features the obituary for Lord Fortrose, chief of the Highland Clan Mackenzie, which you may have heard of from the Starz TV show “Outlander”. The band reads “Kenneth Lord Fortrose OB 18 Oct 1761 AE 43”.

Lord Fortrose (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenneth_Mackenzie,_Lord_Fortrose) supported the government during the Jacobite uprising of 1745, which was an attempt by Prince Charles Edward Stuart to regain the British throne for his father, the Old Pretender, son of King James II and VII. During the Jacobite rising, the clan was divided with Lord Fortrose supporting the British-Hanoverian Government and his relative, George Mackenzie, 3rd Earl of Cromartie, supporting the Jacobites. Clan Mackenzie, seated at Castle Leod, was at one point the most powerful clan in the northern highlands.

Kenneth Mackenzie, commonly called Lord Fortrose, died in 1761 and is buried at Westminster Abbey. This ring is dedicated to his memory and was likely given to his son Kenneth Mackenzie, 1st Earl of Seaforth, or one of his 6 daughters, as his wife had already perished 10 years before Lord Fortrose’s death. This mourning ring features a wavy band design and is an amazing piece of Jacobite and Clan Mackenzie history for any lover of Scottish historical artifacts.
