For sale is a large coloured engraving from H. A. van Rheede tot Drakestein, "Hortus Indicus Malabaricus". The work describes the flora of the Malabar coast of India. The Hortus Malabaricus comprises 12 volumes with 794 copper engravings. The first volume was published in 1678, the last in 1693. The work is considered the first comprehensive printed treatise on Asian and tropical flora.
The primary use of betel leaf is mainly in India as a wrapper for the chewing of areca nut (or in modern times, tobacco), where it is mainly used to add flavour. Remarkable are the plant names, which are given in Latin, Malayalam, Arabic and Sanskrit Rare! Plate size: c. 41.5 x 33 cm / leaf: c. 48 x 37,5 cm

Details: Zum Verkauf steht ein großer, dekorativ kolorierter Kupferstich aus H. A. van Rheede tot Drakestein, "Hortus Indicus Malabaricus". Das Werk beschreibt die Pflanzenwelt der indischen Malabarküste. Der Hortus Malabaricus umfasst 12 Bände mit 794 Kupferstichen. Der erste Band wurde 1678, der letzte 1693 veröffentlicht. Das Werk gilt als die erste umfassende, gedruckte Abhandlung zur asiatischen und tropischen Flora.
Die Blätter des Betelpfeffer werden vor allem in Indien benutzt um Pan darin einzuwickeln, eine Mischung aus der Arekanuss und Gewürzen.
Bemerkenswert sind die Pflanzennamen, welche in Latein, Malayalam, Arabisch und Sanskrit angegeben sind.
