Armorial of Europe and the Golden Fleece
Armorial de l'Europe et de la Toison d'or

This miniature is hand painted high quality reproduction of illuminated manuscript leaf of An Armorial of Europe and the Golden Fleece

The original manuscript containing an armorial representing the members of the Order of the Golden Fleece between 1429 and 1461. It is one of the most famous medieval armorials. It is currently kept in the Arsenal Library.

History:

The manuscript was probably commissioned by a herald from a province dependent on the Duke of Burgundy. He could be a relative of Jean Le Fèvre de Saint-Remy, the first herald of the order of chivalry. It was regularly updated between the date of the foundation of the order in 1430 by Philip III of Burgundy and 1461. Some coats of arms and figures were added during the 16th century. The manuscript underwent mutilations during the following century. In the 18th century, the manuscript belonged to Antoine-René de Voyer by Paulmy d'Argenson, whose library is at the origin of the collections of the Arsenal1 library.

The manuscript is composed of two parts:

a first part containing the full-page portrait of 79 knights of the order, on horseback, in great heraldic dress and armed for the joust.

a second part containing coats of arms from all over Europe.

The shields and knights are drawn with pen and colored with gouache on paper. Some pages were left without color.
