Antique Art Nouveau Coin Change Purse Farm Advertising Leather Silver Maiden #1.

We have 3 of these. Two, including this one, are advertising farm-related coin purses, and one is for dry goods, see last image

FOR THIS LISTING YOU ARE BIDDING ON COIN PURSE #1 ONLY

These promotional coin purses were given out fairly widely, but since they usually advertised only local businesses, it is extremely uncommon to find more than one for a particular business.

Therefore collectors usually choose a particular state or geographic area, or alternatively a specific category (such as banks, insurance companies, liquor stores, shoe stores, dress shops, farming...you get the idea).

Our thrifty Victorian forebears appreciated this type of giveaway since not only were they free, but they were also useful and durable.

Merchants would simply choose the theme for the silver plated top and supply the purse manufacturer with their information which was then enclosed behind a celluloid cover.

Every time a lady opened the purse she’d see the name of the retailer. That’s real bang for your buck.

The color of the leather varied, as did the motif of the silvered top. Our two have the identical maiden face, which catered to the Art Nouveau craze sweeping the world around the turn of the last century. The maiden is surrounded by a horseshoe “halo” and 4-leaf clover motif for good luck.

These purses were in constant daily use and are therefore often found in truly poor condition, with loss of silver finish, rust on the metal, deteriorated leather etc.

Both of our offerings are in GREAT CONDITION.

Purse #1 has maroon leather which is surprisingly supple and soft, with just a few tiny bites. It’s so supple that you could rub leather conditioner into it if you wanted to and it would soften if even more, but I prefer leaving antiques in their found condition.

Kiss lock closure is tight, holds securely and shuts with a nice sharp click.

The condition of the silver plate OUTSTANDING - VERY SHINY.

There is a little yellowing on the insert from being behind the celluloid for over a century.

Advertisement is for FARMERS STATE BANK, Shell Rock, Iowa.
