For sale is this authentic antique Ethiopian Coptic Christian crucifix cross. Small crosses worn on the neck have been part of Ethiopian culture and the Ethiopian Orthodox Church for hundreds of years. Historically made from wood, bone, leather and carved stone, the 18-19th century saw the use of silver coins and silver alloy metals become the more popular tradition. In early examples, crosses were simply cut from large coins such as the Maria Theresa Thaler (Dollar) or the Emperor Menelik Dollar. More commonly, the silver coins were melted down and a neck cross was cast in the lost wax method. Old crosses often incorporate a circle into the motif, often at the center of the cross. The circle is believed to represent the Eternal and Everlasting Love of God, as shown through Christ's Crucifixion, Christ's Halo and Resurrection. Many of these were made of bronze and plated with silver, or cast of a mixture of bronze and silver (often very low purity — maybe .20-.40 in fineness). This particular piece is untested for any precious metals, so I am unsure of its composition. It could be plated or could be nickel or could have silver content. I am unsure of composition. This piece was purchased out of a private US based collection a little while back. Prior to that, it was a part of a private UK based collection for many years. Prior to that, it was purchased in Ethiopia when a family from Europe went there on holiday. This is guaranteed authentic and ethically acquired. You will receive the exact item in the photo. This is an incredible piece and would make a great addition to any collection! Don’t pass it up!
