Functional Old Antique Telescope with Sunshield

This small spyglass is in good functional condition despite its very old appearance.  It seems likely the robust patina (tarnish) reflects its age, as the knurled edges of the draw mounts are very thin and stick out, both characteristics of scopes from the 1800s. The square back edge of the pin slot of the eye lens cover is also found in earlier versions of this type of telescope. The drilled holes are intentional and designed to let air escape, a very rare design element for a scope this small.  It would not be surprising if the telescope dates from the time of the civil war or slightly later.

The telescope is almost complete and has retained its sunshield and swivel eye lens protector. However, it has lost its objective cap and the original stitching of the leather, indicating the leather is glued on. Mechanically the scope works well as the draws have no significant dings and open appropriately. The large draw mount has been glued to the main tube; however, this is not a serious problem as there is little need to detach this mount as it does not block access to any lens. The telescope forms a clear sharp image and focuses very precisely when the smallest tube is moved to the appropriate postion.

The telescope is about 6 inches long when folded, 18 1/2 inches long when fully extended and has an objective lens with a diameter of about 1 and 1/8th of an inch. It can be dissembled for cleaning if that should become necessary.

Be sure to examine the images as they form an important part of the description. Although shipping is listed as economy, items will generally be shipped priority if costs are comparable.   I will consider sending the telescope to restricted countries if a buyer seems responsible and assumes shipping risks.
