Original antique engraved map of Florida, the West Indies, and Central America, printed more than 189 years ago.

  • The map is titled "East India Islands" and is centered on Santo Domingo (Hispaniola), covering the area from Florida and the Bahamas through the Caribbean Islands of Cuba and Hispaniola, south as far as Panama Bay and the Orinoco River, and east to the Caribbean Islands or the Lesser Antilles.


  • The Bahamas (Bahama or Lucaya Islands), Honduras, the Panama Bay, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and part of Mexico are also included.


  • The map identifies the island of Guamhana or Cat Island, in the Bahamas as "The first Land of all America discovered by Columbus in 1492 which he called St. Salvador," the site where Columbus supposedly landed on October 12, 1492.


  • Various important rivers, islands, cities, and other topographical details are noted.


  • There is a wealth of fascinating detail, including East and West Florida, the Spanish Main, St. Eustasia, Veragua, Porto Rico, Atacapas, Lake Macayo (Okeechobee), and the Tropic of Cancer.


  • The image area of this map measures 19 x 23 cm [7½ x 9"]. It was engraved by Hazen Morse, and it was published by Samuel Walker, Boston, 1834 in Conrad Malte-Brun's A System of Universal Geography, or a Description of All Parts of the World.


  • Conrad Malte-Brun was the founder of the Paris Société de Géographie and one of the finest French cartographers of the early 19th century.
