engraved hand colored decorative antique map of of northern India,
Nepal, and Bhutan,
published by John Tallis & Company more than 170 years ago.
- The image area measures 2.55
x
31.4 cm
[9¼" x 12¼"], and the map features finely-detailed cartography
surrounded by an ornate, leafy border, in the distinctive Tallis style.
- It is titled Northern India, including the
Presidency of Calcutta, and
the
coverage area extends from the Himalayas to the Bay of Bengal, west to
the Rann of
Kutch.
- There are six handsome vignettes, drawn by A.H. Wray and
engraved by J.H. Kernot, including the Seal of the East India Company;
Car of
Juggernaut; the British Residency, Hyderabad; a Hindu couple; a Tiger Hunt
(with hunters on elephants); and the Ruins of Old Delhi.
- The legend indicates
British possessions [pink], states under British protection [yellow]
& independent states [green].

John Tallis was one of the last great decorative map makers,
and his
maps are prized for their wonderful illustrations of indigenous scenes
and people.
- Condition: This map is in very good
condition, bright and
clean, with good margins all around, a vertical center fold, as issued,
and no
marks, rips, or tears. It is blank
