Bernie Wrightson was an American artist, known for co-creating the Swamp Thing, his adaptation of the novel Frankenstein illustration work, and for his other horror comics and illustrations, which feature his trademark intricate pen and brushwork. Wrightson began his career as an illustrator for The Baltimore Sun newspaper in 1966. In 1968, he was hired by DC Comics and was a regular artist on the House of Mystery and House of Secrets horror titles. Wrightson and writer Len Wein created Swamp Thing in House of Secrets #92 (July 1971). The character soon received its own monthly series, for which Wrightson drew the first ten issues. In 1974, Wrightson began working for Warren Publishing magazines. Wrightson illustrated adaptations of works by well-known horror writers, including "The Black Cat" by Edgar Allan Poe and "Cool Air" by H. P. Lovecraft. He drew comic book adaptations of Stephen King's screenplay for Creepshow in 1982, which led to several more collaborations with King. Wrightson spent several years creating an illustrated edition of Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein, which was released in 1983. Later in his career, Wrightson provided concept art for various films and television series. Bernie Wrightson's work in comics and animation has won him world-wide recognition and a “cult” fan following. Of which I am one.

Bernie Wrightson: A Look Back was originally by Land of Enchantment in 1979. Edited by Christopher Zavisa. It begins with the impact of comic books on a six-year-old living in Baltimore in 1955. Each new chapter is concisely set up by author Christopher Zavisa and followed by the own words of Bernie Wrightson, compiled from interview sessions. With page after page of illustrations (including a few complete works), this book is truly the definitive look book at the career of Bernie Wrightson, America's Greatest Illustrator of the Macabre.

From the inside flap:

In the western world, after the “Golden Age” of Nielsen, Clarke, Dulac, Rackham, Sime and others, the art of the fantastic nearly disappeared. Its spirit survived primarily in illustrations for the lowbrow “pulp” magazines of the 1930s and 40s.  Then in the 1950s it took on new life and began to flourish in the macabre E.C. comics, such as Haunt of Fear and Tales from the Crypt.

A decade later such art - considered too subversive for children - was forced out of American comics and into black and white magazines like Creepy and EerieNow collector’s items, these marginal periodicals provided outlets for a different kind of artist: the 1960s bore witness to a renaissance in fantasy art that had roots in pop culture “trash”. Among the more talented in this movement was Berni Wrightson.

Berni Wrightson: A Look Back details his early magazine and comic work, including the evolution of his justly renowned The Swamp Thing. A number of unpublished illustrations from Wrightson’s masterpiece, Frankenstein, are also collected here.

Berni Wrightson: A Look showcases the talents of one of America’s foremost illustrators. Every aspect of the artist’s career is explored by the books creator, Chrisopher Zavisa. With 360 pages, over 100 in color, this is the largest and most comprehensive single volume ever assembled on an illustrator of the Fantastic.
