Landscape in the South of France, Mountains, Garden, Flowers , Signed

This lovely antique French oil painting on panel depicts a landscape in the south of France. A garden with flowers surrounded by stone walls is in the foreground and mountains can be seen in the background. It is signed “M-A-Izart”. Marie-Antoinette Izart, born in 1867 in Roubaix, was a French female painter and student of Eugène Deuilly, teacher at the Ecole Nationale des Arts Industriels de Roubaix, and the well-known French painter, Jules Adler. Her father was a merchant originally from Fendeille near Castelnaudary in the south of France and her mother was the daughter of a merchant in Saint-Omer in northern France. They married in 1866 and moved to 19 rue de l’Isly in Roubaix. Marie-Antoinette Izart specialized in painting flowers and gardens. She was a member of the Société des Artistes Français and her works were often exhibited in salons and exhibitions between 1900 and 1925.  She was awarded prizes at the “Salon de l’Union Artistique de Roubaix-Tourcoing” in Roubaix, the “Salon des Beaux-Arts” in Lille, the “Exposition des Beaux-Arts” in Reims and the “Salon des Artistes Français in Paris. The last information available for her is from 1926 when she stilled lived at the same address in Roubaix with her sister Julia (1873-1938). Julia donated a painting of Marie-Antoinette, “Rosier Jaune”, to the Musée de Roubaix along with a drawing by Jules Adler. After  Julia's death in 1938 some of the paintings by Marie-Antoinette were sold at the Hotel des Ventes de Roubaix.

Marie-Antoinette Izart is listed in the Bénézit Dictionary of Artists, the renowned and very extensive publication of biographical information on visual artists in all fields.
