Die Aufschriften "SOUTH AFRICA", "BIG FIVE 2022" und das südafrikanische Wappen sind ebenfalls Bestandteil des Designs. Die Rückseite zeigt zwei Hälften eines Löwenkopfes. Platziert man zwei dieser Münzen nebeneinander, erhält man ein vollständiges Nahaufnahmeporträt eines Löwen. Wenn mehrere dieser Münzen nebeneinander gelegt werden, ist ein ganzes Löwenrudel zu sehen. In der Mitte sind der Nennwert "FIFTY RAND", das Gewicht "5OZ" und die Feinheit "Au 999.9" abgebildet. Der Afrikanische Löwe (Panthera leo) ist das größte und bedeutendste Landraubtier Afrikas.
