Wonderful estate sale find in these beautiful vintage 2pc Copeland • Spode's Tower • England 10-3/4" dinner plates. This is the Tower pattern in red/pink transferware by Copeland of England. The
Tower pattern was introduced c1814 and was derived from a printed
illustration from the book by Merigot 'Views of Rome and its Vicinity'
published c1796-1798. The Tower depicts the Bridge of Salaro,
near Rome. Pink Tower was introduced in 1923, these plates have 3 impression marks on back, but hard to make out with clarity, but are the older back-stamp. Please see the photos for the makers mark details. These plates have a beautiful
vibrant cranberry/raspberry color and are transferware meaning that the
pattern is under the glaze and is therefore, permanent.
Tower
pattern was printed in a variety of colors during its almost 200 year
production history, but particularly in blue and later in pink. The
original pattern was transfer printed in 'medium Ultramarine blue' which
is quite pale. In
about 1860 it was produced in a darker, 'flowing' blue known as Royal
Saxon blue or flow blue. In about 1894 the pattern was printed on Gadroon
shape, based on designs of Georgian silver, in dark Royal blue (also
known as Zaffres blue) which became very popular and was still in
production in 2001.
Plates are in excellent condition! No chips, dings or pings! The usual light surface or utensil wear here and there from years of adding flair to Betty's china cabinet, but nothing that distracts! Look to have been used very little. Please see enlarged pics for best description and details.
