Kobo Abe: The Man Who Turned into a Stick, 1975, 1st Edition.

Signed by the author in black pen on the front end paper and inscribed to his friend and first translator, Vlasta Winkelhoferova, my mother.

A set of three plays: The first play of the set, The Suitcase, is subtitled Birth; the second play, The Cliff of Time, is subtitled Process; and the third, The Man Who Turned into a Stick was given the subtitle Death.

Hardcover with original paper dust jacket. 
The book is in fine condition. Black cloth boards with gilt lettering on the spine, binding tight, pages unmarked, clean, slight yellowing  due to age.
Dust jacket shows some signs of wear due to handling, rubbing and has small tears at the top spine.


Kobo Abe was the pen name of Kimifusa Abe, Japanese writer, playwright, musician, photographer, and inventor. Abe’s literary work includes poetry, short stories, essays, novels and plays.

 

Vlasta Winkelhoferova was a Czech japanologist, author and translator. In 2012 she was awarded Japan’s Imperial Order of the Rising sun, Gold Rays with Rosette for her work.
