Elaborate 4-color 1950s or 1960s ternary phase model from Notre Dame University lab. Hand made using color-coded welded wires to create a three-dimensional depiction of a ternary system. The piece was used in the laboratory, but with its complexity, color and craftsmanship makes an attractive display piece. 

This particular model is labeled "Ternary Phase Model No. 1" with a Dymo label. It came with a paper label (which is loose, and will be included with the model) "5. Three eutectiferous binaries with limited solubility in each binary system." "Eutectiferous" seems to be an invented word taken from "eutectic." The model is on a triangular base, 10.75 inches on each side, and 7 inches high at the tallest point. It's in excellent condition. 

According to ASM International "Ternary systems are those having three components. It is not possible to describe the composition of a ternary alloy with a single number or fraction...To represent completely the phase equilibria at constant pressure in a ternary system, a 3-D model, commonly termed a space model, is required; the representation of composition requires two dimensions, and that of temperature, a third dimension. The model used is a triangular prism, in which the temperature is plotted on the vertical axis, and the composition is represented on the base of the prism, which may be conveniently taken as an equilateral triangle."
