Published by William Blackwood & Sons, London, 1854. Includes a tipped in autograph note signed by Samuel Warren (Warren sat in the House of Commons for Midhurst 1856–1859) “…admit the bearer to the gallery of the House of Commons”, dated 28th May 1858. Bound in the publisher's blind stamped cloth, bumped to the edges and corners. Spine ends pushed, small splits. Though complete in itself, the volumes are 2 (of the three) volumes of the Collection of the complete works. Blocks generally sound, though toned, with some scattered foxing here and there. Signature of D L Astley, (Delaval Loftus Astley, 18th Baron Hastings, 8th Baronet Astley 1825–1872), with his plates beneath. Very Rare with the signed House of Commons ticket included.
"Warren's second novel… which was an immediate best-seller, concerns a firm of attorneys who discover that Tittlebat Titmouse, a poor draper's clerk, may have a claim to the large estate of Yatton. The attorneys commence an action which results in Titmouse displacing the unbelievably pious John Aubrey as the owner of the estate, and its annual income of £10,000. Titmouse revels in his new found wealth, until a new round of litigation is commenced which returns Aubrey to his place as squire of Yatton. Titmouse is disgraced, and ends his life in a lunatic asylum. The narrator repeatedly tells the reader that the English legal system is close to perfection, but the actual workings of the law in Ten Thousand a-Year paint a more negative picture. Dickens seems to have read Warren's fiction and non-fiction, and to have borrowed images and ideas" (ODNB). First published in the Blackwood's Magazine in instalments in 1839; first published in book form in 1841.

MY GRADINGS
New: A new book, never used.
As New (AN): Although a used book, it should appear unread with no flaws, just as when it was sold new.
Fine (F): Should have no flaws, a perfect copy of a used book. Mint: Another term for Fine.
Near Fine (NF): May show a small flaw, such as shelf wear, but nearly perfect and unread.
Very Good (VG): The broadest category for used books, this describes any average used book. May have small flaws, and has probably been read, but should appear overall clean and attractive.
Good (G): Will probably have significant wear or damage, although is still intact. Suitable for reading, but not necessarily a good gift copy. The old saying in bookselling is "good ain't good."
Fair: Another term for Poor or Reading Copy: Heavily worn or damaged, a poor book will be readable but not attractive. Binding Copy: This may or may not be the complete pages of the book, but the binding has been broken or damaged to the point it will need professional rebinding

RETURNS - If you are unhappy with your purchase please contact me in the first instance before returning. Items returned must be with the original packaging, especially if returning due to being damaged in the post, as this may need to be inspected by the relative postal company.
