original 1872 steel engraving of an illustration by Granville Perkins
titled
"Delaware Water Gap."
- This illustration includes a
group of afternoon picnickers on the New Jersey side of the Delaware
River.
- There are three rowboats out on the water, and in the distance
you can see the telegraph poles along the railroad bed on the
Pennsylvania side.
- The tranquil scene was painted by famed artist Granville Perkins and
engraved by Robert Hinshelwood. It is printed on a heavweight paper,
with a decorative swash title.
- The image area measures 14 x 21.6 cm
[5½" x 8½2"] on a larger sheet with generous margins on all
sides.

It was published in 1872 by D. Appleton & Company, New York —
one of the elegant full-page engraved illustrations in Picturesque
America, a Victorian-era book inspired by the prose of
William Cullen Bryant, during an era when
the wild landscape of rural America excited awe and wonder among its
citizens, most of whom were city dwellers.
- Condition: This engraving is in excellent
condition, sound
and clean, with no marks, rips, or tears. It is

best known
for landscape and marine
subjects. He contributed illustrations to numerous journals and books
of the 1870s and 1880s.
