An unusual Chimu rattle, with a free-floating piece of wood in the middle roughly 2" x 1.5" that moves freely within the "cage".

Maybe I watched too much Supernatural, but it reminds me of something that was carved to contain a spirit or entity, with watchers on all sides preventing anyone from coming to open it. But, that is just my guess and you probably know better than me! All I know is I'm not breaking it open! Maybe it represents a treasure being guarded, or a toy rattle for children to play with centuries ago. Perhaps it was a sort of musical rattle.

There is obvious patina and signs of age, with some chips in the wood developing a patina of their own which makes it hard to tell.

Stone and shell (?) is inlayed into the wood.

Whether it is pre-Columbian, or 1600s production, or later, I do not know. You will feel for yourself that it is very old.

Priced high to allow true collectors a chance to find this listing and make your best offer.
