Photograph Notes: Prior to the construction of the first Southease Bridge in 1791 any traffic wishing to cross the river between Lewes and Newhaven used Stocks Ferry. The old lane on the western side is still in place and runs from Newhaven Road to the river as a public footpath. The old causeway across the flood plain is still very much in evidence here.
