Friends were allowed to call him “Maxim” for short, friends whom he later, without hesitation, had sent to the guillotine when they were no longer politically acceptable to him. Robespierre is considered one of the leading and most famous figures of the so-called Reign of Terror of the French Revolution. Under the impression of the increasing pressure of counter-revolutionary forces from outside as well as from within, the so-called Revolutionary Council was founded in 1793, with the approval of the National Convention, under the leadership of Robespierre, which immediately legally recognized suspected and alleged enemies of the revolution in general and without further judicial hearing could be sentenced to death. And in just 49 days of its existence, almost 1,500 alleged traitors were sent to the scaffold to the executioner in Paris. And in order to enforce this with all his might, “Maxim” did not shy away from removing former friends who no longer wanted to follow him in his absolute radicalism, as well as Georges Danton, an extremely powerful political power factor and former comrade-in-arms from the early days days of the revolution. In the trial against Danton, allegedly for treason and anti-revolutionary activities, there was no other way than to falsify evidence and bribe witnesses, which is always a sign that the system that is being tried is itself corrupt . Thus the blind terror of those days turned against Robespierre himself. Allegedly in possession of a list of other conspirators in the ranks of the National Convention, which he does not want to read out loud, there is turmoil among the representatives, because everyone could be taken away and executed tomorrow. And what Robespierre did not expect, the Convention, always divided, always complaining and hopelessly divided, decided, probably only out of purely solidarity-based fear, to dissolve the Revolutionary Council and thus also to depose Maximilien de Robespierre. He and his supporters narrowly escaped arrest, but their retreat was stormed by the National Guard. Many of “Maxim's” followers committed suicide under these depressing circumstances, others died in the hail of soldiers' bullets, and Robespierre himself was hit in the head with serious consequences by a ricochet. But the very next day, without any hearing, without a trial and already half dead but halfway patched up, Robespierre also walked up the last steps that Louis the 16th, Marie Antoinette, Danton and so many others before him had to climb.
