I reperti ceramici più antichi di Gubbio (Perugia) risalgono al Neolitico (VI - V millennio aC). Sono emerse anche testimonianze del Neolitico, dell'età del Bronzo, del Ferro e, soprattutto, del periodo romano: in località Vittorina è stata rinvenuta un'officina del I secolo d.C. nella quale sono presenti anche tentativi di terraferma. L'attività produttiva nel campo della ceramica, documentata fin dal XII secolo, ebbe grande sviluppo a partire dalla metà del Quattrocento. I numerosi ceramisti locali furono poi associati a maestri stranieri (senesi, norciani, borgo sansepolcro, teramani ecc.), determinando un confronto di esperienze.

The oldest ceramic artefacts in Gubbio (Perugia) date back to the Neolithic period (VI - V millennium BC). Evidence from the Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age and, above all, the Roman period also emerged: a 1st century AD workshop was found in the Vittorina area in which there were also attempts at terra firma. The production activity in the field of ceramics, documented since the twelfth century, had great development starting from the mid-fifteenth century. The numerous local potters were then associated with foreign masters (from Siena, Norcia, Borgo Sansepolcro, Teramo etc.), determining a comparison of experiences.
