Photograph Notes: The Paragon is lined on one side by a terrace of five joined pairs of late Georgian houses (c. 1796) designed by William Paty. Their front elevations have semicircular-arched doorways with a fanlight and six-panel doors. Each of the houses looks out on to a communal private garden, with views of the Avon gorge. The closed end of this cul-de-sac lies behind the photographer with Sion Hill and Royal York Terrace up ahead. William Paty (17581800), a surveyor, architect and mason working mainly in Bristol was appointed City Surveyor in 1788.
