Description: Volume I states Second Edition; the remaining volumes with no statement of edition but presumably first printings. Large octavos (25cm), uniformly bound in quarter-linen over mottled boards; 832;1065;1155;831;921pp, folding map following text in v.I. Retired seminary library set; typical library markings to all five volumes but the texts remain fresh, complete, and unmarked. Texts entirely in German (printed in Roman type, not fraktur).

The first five volumes of Schmidt's monumental anthropological survey of indigenous cultures and religions, intended as an extended proof of his concept of "primitive monotheism." The work was published serially over the course of forty years, the twelfth and final volume appearing in 1955, a year after his death.
