Found at an estate sale, these two charming antique 7.5” x 9.5” convex reverse glass hand-tinted prints are scenes by noted British artist Charles Haigh-Wood (1854-1927). Each is a reproduction of a much larger and meticulously detailed oil painting of a charming domestic scene inspired by England’s Regency era. Unfortunately time hasn’t been kind to these two prints and one has a crack in the glass (see photos). It’s "A Time for Roses". I haven’t been able to find out the title of the second print. Each is framed under glass in an elegant 11.5”x13.5”x1” wood and gesso frame. The third photo shows a 12” ruler for scale and the fourth shows the curvature of the glass.

As is unfortunately all too often the case at estate sales, I wasn't able to learn anything about the age or history of these intriguing prints, which I would guess to date from around 1910. As can be seen in the detail photograph of the crack in the glass of "A Time for Roses" the image is on the underside of the glass. The detail of each print is clear and sharp (see photos) and I would guess that each one is a hand-tinted photogravure that’s been applied to the underside of the glass. "A Time for Roses" is one of Haigh-Wood’s most famous paintings. The second painting seems to be a little-known one, which I find surprising considering its charm.

One detail photo shows roses on a hat in “A Time for Roses” as viewed through a 10X loupe. Another shows a flower in a bouquet in the second print as viewed at 60X magnification. A third shows the collar of the toy dog, also in the second print at 60X magnification, with four colors, white, black, pink, and gold.

Charles Haigh-Wood (1854-1927) was a noted and prolific painter of portraits and genre scenes inspired by the Regency era of England. He was classically trained in the academism art style and achieved almost photographic realism in his paintings. His daughter Vivienne (1888-1937) was the first wife of acclaimed poet T. S. Eliot.

As noted above, over the years the glass of one print has cracked at the lower left corner and the frame of the other has unfortunately acquired some significant damage to the lower right corner (see photos). Each framed picture weighs 1 lb. 10 oz., making it easy to hang.
