Original
fold-out highway map of New York and the Northeast, published by the
U.S. Rubber Company more than 95 years ago.
-
This map opens to 15½" x 18" and has good detail on old road
alignments, with cartography by Mixer's Motor Maps of New York City.
-
When this map was published, the Bear Mountain Bridge was the only
highway span across the Hudson River south of Albany.
-
In the vicinity of the bridge, the map labels Camp Smith, Roa Hook,
Harriman Park, and the location of the United States Shipping Board
fleet — 164 ocean-going merchant ships anchored in the Hudson River at
Peekskill.
- The rear panel has an ad for the U.S. Royal Tire, "built of Web Cord, with
each individual spiraled cord insulated in virgin rubber."
- Two of the inside panels have photos of scenes along the Storm King
Highway and another ad for U.S. Royals, "made by the world's largest producer
of rubber."
- The United States Rubber Company, headquartered in Naugatuck,
Connecticut became Uniroyal in 1961, and in 1990 Uniroyal
was acquired by France-based tire maker Michelin.
-
The Bear Mountain Bridge opened in 1924, and the photograph on the
front cover was likely taken just prior to its opening because there
are no cars on the bridge. The map itself is undated and was published
circa 1927.
