The image of the Kazan Mother of God is one of the most revered in Rus'. People resort to Her in a variety of needs and sorrows, and She always comes to the rescue. This icon is traditionally used to bless newlyweds for their crown.
The icon miraculously appeared in Kazan after the conquest of the Kazan Khanate by Tsar Ivan the Terrible. In June 1579, Kazan suffered from a terrible fire. On the ashes of one of the burnt houses, a miraculous icon was found, which received the name of Kazan. When the icon was solemnly transferred to the temple, two blind men miraculously regained their sight. These miracles were the first in a long list of miracles and healings. The story of the discovery of the icon so amazed Tsar Ivan the Terrible that he ordered a church to be erected at the site of its discovery and a nunnery to be built next to it.
In the 17th century, during the Time of Troubles, the Most Holy Theotokos took the Russian militia under her protection. Three days of fasting and fervent prayer before the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God bowed the Lord to mercy, and the militia drove the Poles out of Moscow.
Many events in Russian history are connected with the miraculous image of the Kazan Mother of God. She helped our people during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 and, together with the troops, victoriously reached the borders of Russia.
Many copies have been made from this icon, through prayers before which great miracles have happened and are happening.
