Photograph Notes: According to Chambers Dictionary, a ravelin is a detached work with two embankmants raised before the counterscarp. Apart from the 'detached' it leaves me little the wiser. However this guard house stands on a detached triangular structure, surrounded by wide deep vertical-walled ditches, To get into the fort you either need to climb the walls, being shot at by the defenders, or you need to enter the ravelin via a bridge and then a strongly defended tunnel, get past the guard house, and then cross the long drawbridge from the ravelin to the gate, also being shot at by the defenders as you do so. The guard house is now the visitor centre, shop and ticket office.
